Franchising Tip: Motivate Your Employees!

Posted in Business by SamanthaMcCartney on Sep 6, 2008

Buying a franchise is a great way to become a business owner. In becoming a business owner you will have to learn and practice many different skills to be successful versus just being an employee. In reality you will most likely be transitioning from an employee to an owner/manager. This may actually be able to help you since you still remember what is like to be an employee. Whether you are a new franchisee or have been one for some time knowing how to motivate your employees will be a critical part running your franchise and becoming successful!

For starters, remember back to when you were an employee for someone else. Think about your favorite job and where you felt you did your best. Chances are that time that you are remembering is when you had an outstanding manager who knew how to motivate his/her employee’s.

The reason that you want to motivate your employees is so that they can be successful as well as yourself. A person who is happy and feels needed and challenged will produce a greater quality of work than one who isn’t. Also, if you never do anything fun, as a team or never encourage your employees they will not see a point in doing a good job for you. So, keep all of your employees motivated!

If you are unsure of exactly how to motivate your employees here a few suggestions:

The easiest way is to show them recognition and attention for doing a good job. Everyone wants to know that they are doing well, especially from their manager. Using specific praise is a great way to show you recognize them and their efforts!

Provide ongoing training for your employees! Keeping your employees current with what is happening and knowing what they are doing can provide for a great sense of security for them and will provide better outcomes for your franchise if everyone knows what they are doing.

Also provide a clear career path for all employees. Make sure that they know they can go somewhere with your franchise. When they know there is room to grow they will consistently try to make themselves a better asset to your franchise. It is a win-win situation for you both.

A good work environment is a must! Almost everyone feels that the work environment plays a key role in how employees feel about their place of work. Keeping it honest, safe, clean, and stable is a good way to keep your employees motivated.

Be at team. This is one of the best ways to motivate your employees. Feeling like part of a team is important; you could have pictures made or work together to support a good cause, something like a food drive. At one job I had, we had hot dog stands to raise money for different charities, schools or other community issues. It was a great way to work as a team and do something good for the community!

You may also consider doing some type of snack or lunch for everyone. It may be just because or because of the good efforts of everyone on the team to accomplish something. It is a nice gesture on your part and really lets your employees know you care!

You may also decide to have small contests with your employees. As a manager once I had a selling contest for a small item that was one sale and gave a prize to the person who sold the most each day. Not only did the employees have a good time, the customers were smiling and we sold more of that item than ever before.

These are only a few ways to motivate your employees, there are many more. So, use these ideas and more to keep your employees motivated!

Posted in Business by SamanthaMcCartney on Sep 6, 2008

Keeping a steady flow of customers is a task for any franchise owner. You want to keep your current customers and start getting new ones if you want to be a successful franchise owner. Chances are your franchisor provides you with some forms of marketing or advertising. However that may not be enough for you. So, if you have already tried doing a few small things to increase your business you may want to look at some other ways to advertise for your franchise at the next level. With such a growing market there are many ways to advertise for your business, but check out a couple things you could do to step it up a notch!

You could create a television ad for your franchise. A great way to reach customers is by creating a television advertisement. You will need to make sure that you create something suited for what you are promoting and make it interesting. Also make sure that when choosing a channel or channels that you choose appropriately. If you have an auto body shop it would be wise to put it on a channel that shows car shows. However, you will not reach a huge market since it will be limited to those who watch t.v, and then to those who watch the channel you choose.

You may also decide to go to the radio to reach your customers! A local radio will most likely let you do a radio ad yourself or they can do it for you. You want someone who has a great and exciting voice, however not annoying, for the radio ad. If the voice is not interesting your potential customer will most likely not listen. Also having a catchy saying or song will help since the customer may get it in their head.

Have you considered a billboard to advertise for your franchise? This is a great idea since so many people drive by them each day. You will be able to reach a wide variety of people. If you decide to do this you need to consider location. You want your billboard to be somewhere lots of people will pass it and also near your franchise location. Also you should consider is making the advertisement catchy, usually something funny will work. Make sure it is also appealing to the eye as far as colors, and what you decide to put on it.

And, don’t forget about your local newspaper when you advertise your franchise. This is a great way to reach potential customers. When doing this you should check with the paper on the best days for putting an ad out, a day with the highest number of readers. Also you should run the ad for at least 3-4 weeks since that will gain people’s attention seeing it more than once. It is important that you choose a good section of the paper to put the ad in.

All of these are great ways to promote your franchise and start getting new customers to check out what you’re offering! You will soon be on your way to big success if you utilize as many forms of advertising as you possibly can.

Buying a Franchise: Should I Buy Two Different Ones?

Posted in Business by SamanthaMcCartney on Sep 6, 2008

If you are embarking on being a franchisee, you have made a great choice. You will be investing your money and time into something that can bring you great successful personally and financially. You will become your own boss and have great satisfaction in saying you own your own business. However, you may be thinking you want to achieve greater successful as a franchisee by starting more than one franchise. The concept of starting more than one franchise can be very risky or have the potential to be very successful! You may have found several franchise opportunities that you would like to invest in.

Choosing which franchise can be a hard decision especially if you are wanted to open more than one.

If you have more than one franchise of interest and have the money and business skills needed you may be thinking of opening different types of franchises to challenge yourself and increase your potential profits.

The very first thing you need to do is research if the potential franchisor allows you to purchase different franchises. Many franchisors will only allow you to own or operate other businesses while owning a franchise from them. They make want you to focus on their brand and making it a success. Also they may not feel that you will be truly dedicated to their brand if you are branching in different directions. So, before you get to involved you need to figure out if the options you want will be available to you if you choose a certain franchise. Remember you will have to be equally and fully committed to each franchise you start.

Also, keep in mind that if you decide to open multiple franchises of different types they will each come with their own contracts from each franchisor. This means you will be learning multiple businesses at one time and learning to comply with each franchisor separately. This can be quite a big task to take on. So you may want to consider opening them at separate times from each other to avoid being in the middle of a tug a war match.

One good thing about opening different types of franchises is that you are not putting all your money in one pot. If one does not do well or is not suited for you it will only be one versus if you bought multi units from one franchisor.

Buying multi units from one franchisor is another alternative that you have if you wish to open more than one franchise. This can be a great benefit to you since you will gain operating benefits from it as well as start up benefits from the franchisor. Because it is only one franchise you will only being learning one new business system. You may also have more power in the franchisors opinion since you own more than one franchise from them.

The choice is ultimately up to you and you must decide what is right for you! What works for one person is not what will work for another.

Is it Possible to Become a Part Time Franchisee?

Posted in Business by SamanthaMcCartney on Sep 6, 2008

Franchising has become a great way to make money and be your own boss. Being your own boss means, you get to choose your work hours, you get to choose who you work with, and you get to choose what kind of work you do and much more. Franchising is a great way for many to own their own business with much less risk than starting an independent business. Franchising does require you to put time and effort into it if you want to be successful. So, what about the franchise opportunities that say you can franchise part time?

Keep in mind, that usually when something seems too good to be true, it usually is. So, if you are offered to become a part time franchisee with tons of benefits and guaranteed to make a significant amount of money quick, you should step back and really think about it. However, there are some very legitimate part time franchise offers available. The key is to do your research and do it well!

Talk with the franchisor about as many details as possible. Ask as many questions as you can to them. But don’t stop there. Call or visit other franchisees that are currently franchising from them. Ask them how many hours they spend running their business, ask them about the chances of working from home, as them if they are truly benefiting financially from their franchise, and if they would recommend becoming part of the franchise family. This is one of the best ways to judge if what the franchisor is telling you is correct.

Becoming a part time franchisee is a great option for women, especially those with families. Many of them allow you to only spend minimal time in the location and you can do the other work at home. There are many franchises currently available with the mentioned criteria, however you still have to find the right one for you and avoid potential scams.

Some of these part time franchises are run strictly from home and you may have the choice of how part time you wish to be. Basically you will choose your success. If you work more you will make more, however if you work less you will make less. Not all at home franchises will be run this way. Keep in mind that what some can do in an hour takes others 5 hours.

It is important that you be realistic with yourself about being a part time franchisee. If you are only there are few hours a week, you will have to hire a manager or managers. Someone needs to be there to manage the daily duties of the franchise. This means you will in turn be making a little less money since you will have pay them. You will also have to select a well qualified and well suited person to manage your franchise that you trust. After all it is YOUR investment.

So, if you feel that part time franchising is right for you make sure you do your homework and avoid possible scams and you can be successful as a part time franchisee.

Franchise Tip: Reduce Employee Turnover

Posted in Business by SamanthaMcCartney on Sep 6, 2008

Becoming a franchise owner can bring you great rewards as well as great responsibilities. Becoming a “boss” can bring you many great benefits for yourself, however you will have all the duties a boss carries. For example you will have to keep the customers happy, produce quality products or services, manage your time, create schedules for employees, manage the books, and you will also be responsible for hiring and firing staff. This is sometime a challenge for franchise owners. Getting and keeping good qualities is hard to manage. Many find that reducing employee turnover can be one of their biggest challenges.

Employee turnover is the ratio of the number of workers that had to be replaced in a given time period to the average number of workers. Basically how many people are coming and going as employees. Some business have what is known as a high turnover rate, which means that have a shorter tenure than those of other companies in that same industry. Having to replace costs you as a business owner time and money.

First of all it costs money to hire employees. You most likely have to pay for their drug test, and other processing fees. You will also spend time and money training them. If you have a trainer, you are paying double the money to train that person as you will pay the trainer and the trainee. You may also lose money if you are understaffed due to not being well staffed.

You will also be losing time since you will have wasted time training them. But keep in mind that it also takes time from your schedule to find and hire new employees. This can be the bigger issue, especially if you lose a qualified and well seasoned employee. You may be concentrating your time to finding new staff and neglecting other responsibilities.

So, here are a few ways to reduce employee turnover:

First start by clearing addressing compensation and benefits from the beginning of the hiring process. This is two main reasons an employee will leave. They need to know what they are making and what they receive by working at your franchise.

Next, provide a training program for all employees. Keep your employees informed. Also if they know what they are doing they will for more comfortable therefore will most likely stay longer.

Provide a clear path for advance. Another primary reason that employees leave is because they feel that they have no room to grow or aren’t going anywhere with your franchise. If employees know they can grow and advance they will not feel the need to find a new job.

Provide a good work environment. If your employees are uncomfortable they will not want to stay. They will see that there are other and better options available if you do not provide them with good working conditions and environment.

One main way to avoid employee turnover is to hire the right people from the start. Know what you want and what you don’t want for your franchise. Take the time to interview each applicant and get a good feel for them. As a previous trainer for a large company, I could tell within a few minutes if someone was going to work out, and I also knew exactly which managers were conducting interviews.

So, keep your franchise running great by hiring the right people from the start and avoiding high turnover rates!

Franchise Advice: Is an Oral Contract Enough?

Posted in Business by SamanthaMcCartney on Sep 6, 2008

Making agreements and deals with other people is a part of life. Everyone wants to make sure they are getting the best possible deal for themselves. This has been the case for ages now. Back to a time when people were trading goods to sustain their lives, we today do the same. However, as times have changed and we our society has become more intricate, so has the process on making deals. For a long time an oral agreement and a handshake was all that was needed to ensure each person would come through on their part of the bargain. Now, we face so many scams and untruthful people we have to question if a handshake is enough to seal any deal. This is a common dilemma in the franchise world today.

If you are becoming a franchisee you will want to upfront what is expected of you as a franchisee and what the franchisor will provide to you. This is how franchises work; it is what makes them more successful than most independent businesses. These expectations can be on a small or large scale. Regardless everyone needs to know what their part of the deal is and they need to meet it.

Your franchisor may make an agreement or deal with you orally and give you a nice firm handshake. However, they may never carry through their end of the bargain. So, in our current system, what can you really do about it? Is that oral agreement enough to get you what they promised you?

Well, it is enough if and only if you can prove it in court! The best way to do this is by having a witness as you seal the deal with a handshake. Make sure that you have someone you selected and you can trust. You wouldn’t want anything to get turned around on you. If you did not have a witness for you oral contract, you should begin working on your part of the deal. This can sometimes show that some type of deal was made. However, it usually only holds relevance if the other party begins some work on their part of the deal as well. You should also keep anything that can serve as evidence of the deal. Such as receipts, thank you letters, emails, faxes or anything else relevant to the deal.

For the most part oral contracts are withheld on both ends and no one ever has to prove anything, however there is still a small chance it could. So, make sure to follow the guidelines above just in case.

The best way to avoid this completely is to have a written contract between both parties. Even though it may take more time to do it this way, it is the best way to ensure both parties hold up their end of the deal. If the deal is in writing, there is nothing to prove. It may actually end up saving you time if you did have to go to court about an issue.

What causes backache?

There are numerous causes of backache pain, from the benign to the very serious. Although the most likely culprit is poor posture or muscle strain that affects discs, ligaments and muscles, there are other sources of backache too. These sources include, but are not limited to, congenital, metabolic or degenerative diseases. In rare cases, pain can be caused by fibromyalgia (a condition that affects the muscles) a tumor or infection. Doctors will perform tests to rule these out.
